PARENTAL SOCIALISM: Candies & Caries

During the course of two centuries, the state has replaced God as the father-mother of last resort and persons want this protectorate role to be satisfied and amplified “from womb to tomb”.
Nowadays, the thirst or desire for freedom, and responsibility, is not nearly so universal as so many post-Enlightenment philosophers would have assumed.

The end of the Cold War effectively signalled the vindication of classical liberal philosophy’s view that economies and societies organized on socialist principles are incapable of providing decent living standards and quality of life for their citizens (just think about DDR or “Deutsche Demokratische Republik”).

WHAT’S “PARENTAL SOCIALISM”?

So, what’s this “parental socialism”?

It’s a new form of socialism where the individuals invite the government to meddle in their own lives to protect them from themselves and provide security from economic and social risks.

Think about it as a “bottom-up” driven type of socialism where individuals seek to have values imposed upon them by other individuals, by the state or by trascendental forces (now we have democracy and, in the past, we opted for various kings and/or gods).
